Here's why in many ways, it's safer for organizations to implement SaaS and transition to the cloud

In an increasingly interconnected world, the resistance to change and the narrative that 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' can be pretty limiting. Ultimately, an organization's goal is to ease operations and expand its footprint, and while change is hard, it is usually necessary.

Cloud technology is usually approached with some degree of caution - which is good. However, organizations mistakenly believe that their data is safe, tucked away in their warehouse, but there can be breaches anywhere. The search for that elusive certainty of keeping data safe often leads to the assumption that data stored in private warehouses is safer than in the cloud. And while this may be partially true for some niche enterprises or specific extra sensitive data, in the broader scope, moving to the cloud will not only expand the operational and business horizon, but if done right, it can also be much safer.

However, organizations must weigh their priorities and take informed and balanced risk-based decisions regarding their data safety and move. Organizations should be mindful that using cloud technology securely should be the primary objective and not the underlying security of the cloud.

Below are some key points that will establish why a well-engineered Software-as-a-Service* (SaaS) is arguably more secure than the alternatives - provided it is implemented with due diligence.

  1. With the volume of consumers to which cloud provider offers their services, it is better placed to monitor security patterns, does transactional monitoring, and are generally more adept at spotting security anomalies. They are, therefore, better equipped to nip the issues before these potential threats manifest themselves. Thus, an organization can reap the benefits of security at the scale that cloud service providers offer.

  2. Organizations must also deliberate whether their internal IT team is agile and sure-footed enough to quickly roll out patches and hotfixes in the event of a security issue. A cloud service provider often has a troop dedicated to monitoring and deftly fixing breaches, as the entire business model depends on the data security assurance it gives to its consumers. In contrast, organizations running their legacy systems can take weeks, months, or even years to apply security patches.

  3. Organizations are often weary that when they opt for SaaS offerings, they will have limited control over the space, and the employees will be able to share confidential data unabatedly. This inhibition is warranted, but instead of banning the offering altogether, it would be prudent to guide the staff on what tools are okay to use, what to avoid, and when to seek advice. Without these guidelines, the employees may already be using these tools and will be unaware of underlying security concerns.

  4. Instead of concerning themselves with patching, maintaining, and monitoring services that can be better handled by the service provider, it would be wise for organizations to concentrate their efforts on solving security concerns that are unique to them. For example, a senior employee may have inadvertently provided access to their mailbox to the entire organization instead of just their assistant, in which case the internal IT team would be able to fix the issue quickly.

As we have established while implementing SaaS is certainly no silver bullet that will eliminate the threat of cyber security risks. Still, if used correctly, nightmare scenarios are often dodged, and in most cases, the security benefits outweigh the risks.
